
Kalam was brought up in a multi-religious, tolerant society, with Kalam strictly following his religious routine. He spent most of his childhood running into financial problems and started working at an early age to supplement his family's income.

Kalam has even been circled with various controversies as many scientific experts called him a man with no authority over "nuclear physics" and a man who just carried the works of Dr. Kalam played a pivotal organizational, technical and political role in India's Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998, the first since the original nuclear test by India in 1974. He is popularly known as the Missile Man of India for his work on development of ballistic missile and space rocket technology.
